Wines of the region : Bordeaux

Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur

Wines with these appellations can be produced on all vineyards in Bordeaux. Red or white (dry or syrupy), they represent more than 50% of its total production. Stemming from older vineyards, wines from Bordeaux Supérieur are red wines which are more complex and concentrated than AOC Bordeaux's.
Included in these two big apellations are the Bordeaux Rosé, Clairet and the Crémant de Bordeaux, appellations integral to vineyards of Bordeaux.

Côtes de Bordeaux

This region is situated on expansive hills over approximately 100 kilometers north to south with excellent exposure to sun. The Côtes de Bordeaux has numerous appellations - the Blaye, Blaye Côte de Bordeaux, Bourg and Côte de Bourg, Cadillac, Castillon, Francs Côte de Bordeaux, Graves de Vayres or the Saint Foy de Bordeaux - All this variety is a clear demonstrating of the level of their ambition, and quality and richesse of their grapes.

Medoc

Medoc terriors are situated along the left bank of the Garonne and the Gironde, on soil consisting of gravel, limestone or clay. The Cabernet Sauvignon reigns in this region but shares popularity with other wines such as the Merlot, Frank Cabernet, Small Verdot and Malbec. Red wines are among the deepest, most powerful, and prestigious wines of Bordeaux (the first 4 Grand Crus with a classification of 1855 came from Médoc terroirs).
Among the regional appellations are the Médoc, that is given to wines located on the northern part of the zone, and the AOC Haut Médoc AOC. The latter is given to the following communal appellations: the Listrac, Moulis, Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe.

Graves

Situated South of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne river, on soil with a stone and gravel constitution. Whether a AOC Grave wine or the even more prestigious AOC Pessac-Léognan, these wines possess a unique character, made from black fruits, and elegant aromatic spices.

Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac

These three appellations are situated east of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Dordogne river, near the city of Libourne. Red wines from these vineyards are mainly constituted by Merlot, renowned for its fine, elegant and velvety aromas. A number of classified vineyards and prestigious wines are produced on these terroirs. We mention the AOC Pomerol and the Grand-Cru Saint-Emilion which are some of the most elegant wines to be produced, not to be outdone are the AOC Lalande de Pomerol, Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac, Saint-Emilion, Lussac, Mountain, Saint-Georges and Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion.

Sweet or Liquoreux Wines

Stemming from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, they are produced on a unique microclimate and terroirs. Specific conditions are important when maturing grapes to produce rich nectars with the perfect golden reflections. Botrytis cinerea or noble rot has to be present for this magical process to occur. The result being: syrupy/sweet wines with remarkable aromas and smooth flavors. Of course everybody knows AOC Sauternes, but why not discover AOC Barsac, Haut-Benauge, Cadillac, Francs, Cérons, Loupiac, Graves de Vayres, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont or the Saint-Foy-de-Bordeaux.
